Savona Cathedral - logoThe Museum of the Treasury of the Cathedral of Savona, located in the premises of the old Masseria, collects the excellence of the pictorial, textile and goldsmith art of the sacred city.
Triptych Adoration of the Magi

Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi by the Master of Hoogstraeten

The Treasure Museum is accessed through a door inside the choir loft in the cathedral. It was set up in the premises of the former masseria and opened in 1982 to contain and present to the public a rich heritage of valuable paintings, sculptures, works in goldsmithing and sacred vestments. It consists of an access corridor with 14th-century alabaster sculptures and sacred vestments. Next come two rooms that are surprising in their particular display beauty, from the 15th-century panels “Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine” by Tuccio D’Andria and “The Assumption” by Ludovico Brea to the 16th-century “Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi” by the Master of Hoogstraeten.. The Treasury then includes a considerable number of gold and silver objects highly significant for knowledge of the city’s figurative culture and for defining the wide network of relationships that at certain times marked its history. The outstanding pieces date back as far as the early 1500s and coincide with the roveresco enrichment and embellishment of the ancient cathedral on the Priamar. From the oldest piece, a reliquary cross from the mid-1200s, to the 13th-century French goldsmith’s Escape to Egypt, then others, the monstrance of Sixtus IV, and Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere’s extraordinary 15th-century crosier and Cardinal Riario’s altar cross. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are the works documented by numerous items of Ligurian silverware of great quality relating to the continuous flow of precious gifts. The 19th century highlights the revival of city production. The showcases and cabinets of the ancient Masseria then preserve precious fabrics and embroideries, are the sacred vestments that belonged to Savona’s bishops, among the best known preserved is the 15th-century chasuble of Cardinal Vegerio, the protagonist of extraordinary celebrations in the ancient cathedral overlooking the sea.
