The wooden choir of Savona Cathedral, a rare example of 16th-century wooden inlay, was commissioned by Pope Julius II Della Rovere and saved from the destruction of the ancient cathedral.

It is one of the most beautiful inlaid choirs in Italy.: its realization was thanks to the patronage of Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere future pope who shared the expense with the municipality. The work of the Lombardi De Fornari, De Rocchi and Pantaleoni was completed in 1521. When the ancient cathedral was closed to worship and then destroyed, the choir was dismantled and secured until its repurposed location in the new cathedral inaugurated in 1605.
The work is of fine Renaissance inspiration, warm and bright.
The overall perspective view of the stalls highlights in the center a peculiar choral-holder lectern and an elegant piece of furniture initialed by the coats of arms of the patrons: the City of Savona and the Della Rovere family. The composition of the choir stalls is divided horizontally. The lower order features images of nature, arabesques, musical and astrological instruments. The upper order features subjects of saints, apostles, Church Fathers, early martyrs, and the two Savona popes Sixtus IV and Julius II. Some preparatory cartoons for the images of the stalls are the work of the pupils of Leonardo and Perugino.
